WHAT EXACTLY IS IMPROV COMEDY?
Improv, short for improvisational comedy, is a form of live theater where the plot, characters, and dialogue are created spontaneously in the moment. Performers build scenes from scratch without a script, using audience suggestions, active listening, and collaborative instinct.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHORT FORM AND LONG FORM IMPROV?
Short form improv consists of short, game-based scenes driven by specific rules (think Whose Line Is It Anyway?). Long form improv uses a single suggestion to generate a series of interconnected scenes, characters, and recurring themes that build into a cohesive, uninterrupted show.
WHAT ARE THE MOST POPULAR STYLES OF IMPROV?
The most recognized styles include Harold (the foundational long-form structure developed by Del Close), The Armando (scenes inspired by true personal stories told by a monologist), Narrative Improv (spontaneously creating a full play or movie genre, like a noir detective story), and classic short-form games, which is what we'll focus on.
WHAT DOES THE RULE “YES, AND…” MEAN?
“Yes, And…” is the core principle of improv. “Yes” means accepting whatever reality your scene partner presents without judgment or denial. “And” means adding new information to build upon that reality together. It forms the backbone of effective collaboration both on stage and in life.
DO I NEED TO BE NATURALLY FUNNY TO DO IMPROV?
Not at all. Improv is not about telling pre-written jokes or trying to be the funniest person in the room. The humor comes naturally from truth, active listening, and reacting authentically to your scene partner. The primary goal is to support your partner, not deliver a punchline.
DO I NEED ACTING EXPERIENCE TO JOIN A CLASS?
No. Emily's adult improv comedy classes are built for complete beginners as well as experienced performers, with a supportive, judgment-free approach to learning.
HOW ARE IMPROV CLASSES DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL ACTING CLASSES?
Traditional acting classes focus on script analysis, line delivery, and character interpretation based on written text. Improv classes focus on building confidence, trusting your instincts, active listening, learning how to handle the unexpected, and most importantly having FUN!
IS IMPROV USEFUL IF I NEVER INTEND TO PERFORM ON STAGE?
Absolutely. Most people who take improv classes do so for personal or professional growth rather than a career in comedy. The skills learned in class translate directly to better everyday communication, stronger leadership, and easier social interactions. Improv gives you confidence when you have to speak in front of large groups, give presentations and lead groups.
WHY IS IMPROV TRAINING BENEFICIAL FOR ADULTS OF ALL AGES?
Improv sharpens focus, boosts public speaking confidence, reduces social anxiety, and promotes mental flexibility. It teaches adults to embrace uncertainty, step outside their comfort zones, and connect with others in a fun, low-stakes environment.
HOW DOES IMPROV HELP KIDS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS?
For younger people, improv builds vital life skills outside the academic environment. It encourages creative problem solving, strengthens active listening, fosters empathy, and provides a supportive environment.
IS THERE AN IMPROV PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS?
Yes. Emily runs a High School Improv League for students across Bangkok, with weekly rehearsals, workshops, and live comedy matches throughout the season. No previous experience is required.
WHERE CAN I TAKE IMPROV COMEDY CLASSES IN BANGKOK?
Emily teaches improv comedy classes and workshops in Bangkok for adults, schools, universities, and corporate teams. Classes are held in person around the city, with no acting experience required to participate.
DOES EMILY OFFER CORPORATE IMPROV TRAINING IN BANGKOK?
Yes. Emily designs custom improv comedy workshops for businesses, nonprofits, and teams in Bangkok, including a signature session called Unlock Your Superpowers, focused on trust, communication, and confidence.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR OR BRING TO MY FIRST IMPROV CLASS?
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow you to move around freely. Bring a bottle of water, an open mindset, and a willingness to try new things. We handle everything else. There's no such thing as a mistake in improv. If you say “yes…and,” you'll learn to think on your feet and have a great time doing it.
